Plumpton brigade has approximately fifty to sixty members with approximately thirty members actively involved in fire fighting duties throughout the year. Many of our remaining members are available at different times through the year for fire fighting duties, while some remain active in support roles throughout the year. Our members come from all walks of life, including architects, IT professionals, truck drivers, security officers, prison officers, mechanics, nurses, teachers, carpenters, storepersons, office workers, painters and finishers, electricians, and fast food managers to name only a few. Plumpton Brigade has been blessed with continued support from all members, both past and present, all of which have provided the community with a great volunteer service.

Over the years members of Plumpton Brigade have been involved in all the major campaign fires and storm damage assistance in and around Sydney, Newcastle, Wollongong, Gosford, Greater NSW, Canberra and Victoria.

Plumpton Brigade’s emblem is the phoenix, a mythical bird with a tail of beautiful gold and scarlet plumage. It has a 500 to 1000 year life cycle, and near the end of this it builds itself a nest of twigs that then ignites. Both nest and bird burn fiercely and are reduced to ashes, from which a new young phoenix is reborn to live again. The phoenix was also said to regenerate when hurt or wounded by a foe, this being almost immortal and invincible. It is
also said that it can heal a person with a tear from its eyes and make them temporarily immune to death. The Phoenix also symbolises the rebirth of the brigade through each of the name changes from the Mount Druitt Volunteer Bushfire brigade to the District brigade to the Headquarters brigade and finally to Plumpton Rural Fire brigade.

Plumpton Brigade, along with fourteen other Blacktown, Fairfield and Penrith Rural Fire District brigades, is part of the Cumberland Zone. The Cumberland Zone has approximately 1000 firefighters and also has three support groups- Communication, Community Engagement and Training.
